Bein Green

The Bike Fairy left a little something in my garage the other night….or was it THEEEE LEPREEEECHAUNNNNN!

I mean my new Santa Cruz Superlight actually comes with an AC adapter to amp up the green!

Well, it's no longer as clean as my pre-ride photo shoot and actually will never be again.

So, I taped up my hurt wrist and set off for a world of greenery, up in Annadel after a 6 week lapse. Nothing too technical until I heal, but up Canyon to the lake and back had me STOKED!

The 2012 Superlight is a quantum leap from my old 2001.
Someone tell Kermit it's just gotten easy ‘bein green’.

Doctor's Orders: No Arm Wrestling

It’s been a month since I got hurt; so I finally went to a Sports Doc.

Seems that ligaments take awhile to heal….longer than bones even. Thus my small contusion is nearly healed, while my Ulna ligament…. not so much.

Who knew I even had an Ulna ligament? I didn’t, at least not until the Doctor torqued my hand outward, simulating my fall. At that point my screams pretty much cleared out his waiting room.

The good news is I’ll heal. The bad news is it could take 2 months more. Could be worse. At least I can tape up, shut up and do some road rides.

Climbing is fine, but I max out with a 3 mile Lichau Road descent though….so a 12 mile Pine Flat descent will have to wait. The geezer posse will just have to go on without me. So try to keep up the repartee without my scintillating contributions.

One further note to self: Next time, remember not to crash!!!!!

black & blue sky

The bike flipped over as if in slow motion.
As I hurtled in my upside down trajectory, all I could think
before slamming down on the rocks,
was how blue the sky!

Here's a little addendum form Joel, my biking bro.....
I was waiting at the bottom of Marsh & when Matt didn't show for awhile rode back up a ways to find the stoic Prince accompanying his uncooperative steed with twisted bar, despite his smashed right wrist, down to the top of Canyon picnic table, & then with bar newly set, gamely riding the rocky descent to his car, w/ my barely believed opinion that the wrist wasn't broken. The ride up had been all joy and acclamation for the rolling big wheels, the new found enthusiasm smashed asunder, when a solitary rock refused to join the party.

Of Duct Tape & Beer

I’m more of a Safeway kind of guy, but this morning I did make a stop at Whole Foods. I could have bought a 6 pack of some nice IPA for what I ended up paying for that one bottle of Orval Trappist Ale. Somehow I knew it would taste right after today’s mountain bike ride. In retrospect I had no conception of just how good it would really taste!!!!

The hard technical climb was well behind me, just as I neared Buick Meadow up in the flats. That’s when I heard the explosion! My bike grinded to an immediate halt! The shrapnel that had been my rim’s sidewall was lodged in my v-brakes. The tube was shredded. Clearly getting back down would be a schlep.

On this busy Sunday in Annadel, a small crowd of hard core bikers was assembled there at the meadow. Needless to say, my bike was suddenly the main topic of conversation. Too bad I was in no mood to bask in my new found celebrity status. I was ready for a chopper to airlift me home; but that wasn’t gonna happen.

We reasoned that since the rim was trashed, I could ride back on that alone, sans tire. That’s when Dean came to the rescue. His funky fix was as brilliant as it was resourceful and artful. A little duct tape and some zip ties and badabing!

I wasn’t able to hold much air in the tube, but somehow made my way in a hunkered down survival mode, half rolling and half bike hiking. The will to survive and the prospect of that Trappist Ale got me through....... with some moral support from Charlotte and Joel too.

When I finally popped that Orval, I was in need indeed and the beer didn’t disappoint.

The Terminator

Catching Skinny on a hill climb just ain’t gonna happen. When we road bike, I am feeling good just to see him on the distant horizon.

When I crested Sonoma Mt. Rd., he was awaiting me. He quickly pointed out the large rattlesnake sunning itself there on the little traveled road. Rattlers always appear formidable in their very presence. We would soon find out just how formidable.

Just then another cyclist appeared. I yelled out, but he just obliviously waved back and proceeded to run over the serpent sunbather. Kathump!

Just as suddenly a Porsche convertible made the summit. Kathump, kathump!!

Only a Terminator could handle such a pummeling. Miraculously, the snake survived; though now it’s basking in the sun had given way to a menacing slither. It was swiftly heading right for us and it was hella pissed!

I’m outta here I exclaimed..... and for once, I left Skinny to pick up the rear.

rear view

After finishing our Saturday road ride, I was cruising back on Westside road when I came up behind two riders for Team Liquigas Cannondale. These guys would not relent in letting my car pass them. Sensing greatness, and planning to pull off at Wohler Bridge anyway, I just rolled behind them.

Fast forward, pun intended, today’s Amgen winner was Slovacchian, Peter Sagen. It may well have been him blocking my way yesterday; and if so, I had the same ‘from behind’ perspective as did many a rider today.

my toast to Joel

THE DATA’S EMPIRICAL,
HE’S A MEDICAL MIRACLE!
THIS UNORTHODOX DOC
HAS TURNED BACK THE CLOCK.

HIS LIFE IS EXTENDED
‘CAUSE HE’S FULLY SUSPENDED.
ON HIS BIKE IN THE PARK,
HE’S IGNITED HIS SPARK.

AND THIS MAN NEVER TIRES,
YET HE ALWAYS INSPIRES,
WITH HIS INSIGHTS ON LIFE
AND A HOT YOUNGER WIFE!

THOUGH HE’S SEVEN TIMES TEN,
(AND HIS LIFE'S NEAR THE END)
HE CAN STILL BE OUR FRIEND.
FOR HE ISN’T THAT OLD
THIS MAN KNOWN AS JOEL.

HAPPY B-DAY DUDE!!!!
LOVE, MATT

moo tude

While biking up long hill climbs, the mind wanders and it ponders.

Lichau Road is one such stiff climb where mental distraction is a welcome way to change one's focus from a long uphill battle with gravity. Oddly, there is even a stretch that’s nicknamed “Gravity Hill”. The odd part is the supposed reverse gravity. (I could have used some of that on today’s ride.) Fact is, though, the reverse gravity thing is only an optical illusion. My friend’s land surveying crew actually took some topo shots up there and verified just that.

Lichau Road bisects pasture land where cows often graze. You ride over multiple cattle crossings and even sometimes encounter these massive creatures in the road, presenting you with an ornery obstacle.

As I approached the herd, the moo fest began. The sound was loud and incessant! Of twenty some beasts, at least half the herd was joining in the cacophonous chorus. What was their deal anyway?!

I paused to reflect, surmising that this was a cow form of accolade for my triumph over gravity. Probably not.

My yellow powder coated titanium Litespeed is a sexy sight. Did they hope to mate? I definitely wasn’t up for that kind of party.

Were they bemoaning their existential vacuum in a shared cow consciousness? Hmmm. They could also be hungry.

Sounding kinda pissed now, the herd moved toward me en masse.

All righty then..... time to roll.

glug, glug

Hurling your shirt into Lake Ilsanjo?!.... Dude, really??

What was he thinking, this middle aged, less than buff and now bare chested character? He may have aspired to be a man of steel with his military crew cut and fatigues, but shedding his drab brown tee shirt revealed no muscular “guns” and no “six pack” abs.

He sure did look pleased with himself, though. His girlfriend seemed kinda bemused, and yet a little uncertain.

The tee shirt floated there and then slowly bubbled downward, disappearing into the dark water.

What further antics awaited us we wondered? We tried to politely muffle our laughter.

Charlotte, Joel, Bob and I were enjoying the late day sun and glorious afternoon there at our favorite Annadel mountain bike destination, the dam at Lake Ilsanjo. Today felt like we had somehow landed in a picture perfect postcard world. We savored the unusual warmth on this last day of 2011, knowing that the soon descending sun would create a rapid cooling effect. I mean there had been ice on the puddles on yesterday’s trails; so it was still a winter day. The lake must be filled with frigid groundwater and would surely make for a most invigorating swim.

The girlfriend took off her top layer as if to offer him her shirt. She must have sensibly recognized the impending chill as she quickly put it right back on. Common sense at least prevailed on her end.

Meanwhile GI Joe was wrestling to no avail, attempting to snap off a large limb from a nearby oak tree.

“Hey, please don’t hurt that tree. It needs its limbs for chlorophyll production.” implored Charlotte.

So next he decided to forage in a clump of poison oak, the foliage now absent. We well recognized this itchy spot from our many summer rides and called out, but our warning was unheeded. He triumphantly produced a 3 foot length of misshapen tree limb.

He carried his funky find back to his former spot, but then abruptly departed with his date, leaving the makeshift tool behind. Was he not clear on the concept? Were we to be denied our spectator sport?

Moments later, they returned. YAY!

He was not about to abandon his shirt to the resident muskrats after all. He sprawled shirtless on the cold ground and with head and upper torso somewhat submerged in the chilled lake water. He probed with his twisted branch. Up came a soggy trophy!

“So just what was the deal with the shirt?” we had to ask.

“Well, it was something philosophical about the New Year and kind of symbolic”, he endeavored to explain.

(“Yeah, symbolic of being a doofus”, we later chortled.)

He had created a kind of air pocket he further elaborated. The expectation was that the shirt would float.... All righty then. How'd that work out for ya?

He then went on to say, “I wanted to show her what I am made of.”

“And that you did”, said Charlotte.

Yet his date looked less than duly impressed.

She mentioned that he had earlier “baptized his head” in the chilly lake. They may not have been too long into their relationship. She seemed to be still processing the day’s events in her mind.

Off they walked into the now lengthening shadows, he shirtless with a dripping mass in hand.

When we began our descent later, we noticed them making their way down a sketchy, seldom used trail, aptly nicknamed Donna’s Demise. Little did the girlfriend realize her adventure in survival was just beginning!

Epilogue....

Local News Source:

A grim discovery was made this New Year’s Day in Annadel State Park.
The bodies of two hikers were found perched on a steep cliff in a densely wooded and remote area.

The partially eaten body of a middle age woman has led authorities to suspect that her male companion resorted to cannibalism in the night to stay alive. His shirtless body was found nearby, apparently dead of hypothermia.

Police are still baffled by a soaking wet tee shirt found in the proximity.

Tour de Matt

What was I thinking?! I must be watching too much Tour de France.

Earlier....

“Go for it Matt. This is your trail”, encouraged Joel.

“Dude, you always say that based on some ride we did like 3 years ago”, I replied. (I was friskier back in the day)

Suddenly a wild whim came over me. As I shifted into my middle ring, I exclaimed, “Aight. Later!!”

What followed was a wild sprint up the first long and technical half mile section of Marsh Trail.

Well, that was 2 days and 2 dozen ice packs ago. Now maybe I can at least maintain Joel's illusion of my fitness level for another 3 years.

Back In The Saddle

Via con Dios!
What the fuck, Utah?
You let him go!
No, l didn't.
No way! The guy's nuts.
We'll get him when he comes back in.
He's not coming back. -Johnny Utah

Taken from recent email excerpts...

Hey Charlotte,

I just picked up my 3rd bike saddle to try. What a process.... but cool that Norcal lets you demo.

I've upgraded to Fi'zi:k with K:ium rails (Pronounced Koom). The price cannot even be pronounced.

Later -Matt

Hey Matt,

Ooh - sounds so techy classy.

I'm all retro Stone Age with ti rails. -C

Hey Charlotte,

Shyeah..... Ti is like sooo 2010!! -Matt

NOTE: K:ium, a steel alloy, is 8% lighter, yet as strong and has better vibration absorption too.

So, you get the idea. I’m on my third demo saddle now and kudos to Norcal Bike in Santa Rosa for allowing customers to explore the possibilities to get just the right fit!!

The first two Specialized Phenom saddles I tried seemed awesome in theory. Specialized Body Geometry is developed by an ergonomics designer who provides medically proven solutions. The physiology of one’s sit bones is first measured with the BG Fit System (much less invasive than my TSA pat down).

The Phenom Expert saddle was just too hard on the ole butt bones, though. Thus I opted next for the Phenom Gel version. Now my BG recommended size was 155 mm wide (no that doesn’t necessarily equate to a big ass); so, even though my old saddle was 143 mm, I dutifully bumped up to the wider surface area, wanting to be ergonomically correct. My left testicle just wasn’t with the program though! I know, too much information, right?

Enter the Fi'zi:k Aliante Versus. This saddle really mimics the dimensions of my wrecked Avocet Air O2 40R and even has a “pressure relief channel”. Could there also be a “pleasure release channel” cause this sexy saddle is an exotic Italian beauty. Maybe I’ll just get lucky.

Clearly I am very optimistic about the upcoming test ride. To be continued.

Next Day (so many saddles, so little time).....

Yeah, work has been pretty spotty this week. Good thing I have my new gig as a bike saddle test pilot.

Now then, what has transpired with my quest for the ultimate saddle?

Before I even reached the Canyon trailhead, it dawned on me. I was focused on the ride and not the saddle! Need I even say more? Well, no, but I will anyway.

When I Photshopped those clouds behind the Fi’zi:k stock image (above photo), I was going for the visual effect, with little regard to any symbolism. Now I am riding on air!
