kinda kooky

A shout out to Jim & DaBlog welcomes you back!.....And thanks too for those surf forecasting insights......Jim reminded me not to share the local knowledge with any kooks (quite rightly) and by implication that would make me not a kook....so thanks, bro for the vote of confidence. ‘Cause there are plenty of days when I sure feel like one!

bootielicious

How many times has this happened?....

“Dude, what’s that smell?!”

“Oh, sorry man. That would be my wetsuit booties.”

“How ‘bout opening the windows, bro? Seriously, you need to see a doctor for that.”

HOW EMBARRASSING!!

Well, I actually did see the doctor, Bronner that is.

Now friends ask, “Mmmmm, what’s that fresh fragrance.”

cop stop

Town was packed yesterday, what with the big south swell, and parking was hard to come by. I guess other surf spots were closed out cause there were many unfamiliar cars, trucks and faces.

Lucky for me that Rob was packing up as I arrived for second shift. He said to hang for a couple minutes as he finished every surfer’s ritual of shedding neoprene, stowing gear and board strapping.

As we chatted, The Man rolled up. Uh-oh, better be cool.

“How long should I let you stop here?” he asked, somewhat firmly.

Thought process: Hmmm? As long as it takes? Probably the wrong answer.

“Sounds like a rhetorical question.” I replied. “I’m on my way.”

If only I’d had a donut handy...

I circled slowly around and eased into the spot Rob was now waiting to comp me with.

Later I “passed forward” the favor to Hans when he showed up for third shift. Ya gotta have connections these days.

Back On Golden Pond...

I just got my gold card! No, it’s not American Express. It’s my park pass to Sonoma County Regional Parks, my ticket to Spring Lake where I embark on Annadel mountain bike journeys.

Unlike the standard issue green passes, this one is gold and bears the “GOLDEN YEARS” caption. I’ll gladly cop to that label to save the 30 bucks. I’m not proud…. I’ve been exploiting the grey hair for years. I’ve fooled those kids who sell movie tickets for the last decade and have yet to be refused my senior rate.

When I flash my gold, it commands respect. The ranger in the kiosk now says with reverence, “Enjoy your time sir.” (What’s left of it, right?!)

But that’s gonna be my new mantra. “Enjoy your time sir”. And hey, life’s prettaaay, prettaaay good (Larry David intonation).

Doug echoed the life’s good sentiments today. I ran into him after the morning surf session. What a role model! He’s several years older and is hard core. (And he told me he actually reads DaBlog!! So he's definitely got that goin for him.)

We even worked out a life plan…. Live til 95 and surf til yer 80! Note to self: use it or lose it.

????

Jammed for 2 days to get the site plan done for work....then got up at 5:15 am.... next drove over an hour to get to the surf spot.....put on a neoprene suit for the 53 degree water...and paddled fervently to catch a handful of waves.

So the natural question would be is it worth it? HELL YEAH IT IS! I would have done it all for just that one most awesome ride I had !!

functional art

Muddy bike trails, blown out surf, heavy rain…..whatever. Bring it on. Training does not have to reach an impasse. Behold my Kossee Balance Board!!!

I was triumphant on eBay when I scored this baby. Dana creates a one of a kind art statement with each beautifully crafted board. I encouraged him to go abstract with mine and I was blown away with what evolved. When not in use, it occupies a place of display in my living room as part of the décor. It’s that nice!

Training with this board is rapidly putting me more in tune with my center and maintaining my leg strength despite rainy days of no biking. And I get inspired to use it whenever I gaze upon that design. As Dana aptly puts it, "Unique design through limit free originality.... Functional art"

Check one out here on his website.
